Pollution and Going Green

An early morning scene in Lanzhou, Gansu, China, one of the most polluted cities in the country. Taxis fill up with compressed natural gas in Lanzhou, Gansu, China. CNG helps reduce air pollution

China has developed so quickly that pollution has suddenly become a big problem.

Just think about travel in China - all those people who used to ride bicycles but who now own cars. There are a lot more factories making clothes and toys that we buy (Modern Business and Trade). A lot of garbage/rubbish is not disposed of properly and we send garbage to China too! Water pollution from sewage and factories is often not treated before entering rivers. Air pollution, mainly from cars but also factories, is bad. The pollution in Beijing is causing concerns for the Olympics as it can cause breathing problems.

The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze river, the longest of the rivers in China is being built to make more energy out of flowing water instead of burning coal that produces air pollution. It is also trying to make more energy from renewable biological sources. China produces more gases that contribute to climate change than any other country but still produces far less per person than we do.
