Chinese SUVs Gain Traction in Spain, Revitalizing the Off-Road Market
The all-terrain vehicle market is experiencing a resurgence in Spain, driven by the arrival of Chinese manufacturers and a shift away from increasingly stringent European emissions regulations. Previously hampered by size, weight, and predominantly diesel engines, 4x4s faced pressure to meet stricter environmental standards, leading to production cuts.
New Competition and Models
However, the entry of Chinese brands is providing a renewed opportunity for the segment. Several new models are now available in Spain, offering a welcome alternative for off-road enthusiasts. Among the notable newcomers are the Great Wall Motors GWM Tank 300 and the BAIC BJ30 Pro.
GWM Tank 300: Diesel and Hybrid Options
The GWM Tank 300, built on an independent chassis, boasts advanced four-wheel-drive capabilities with selectable positions (2H, 4H, 4L) and differential locks. It’s offered in two configurations: a 2.4-liter diesel engine producing 184 horsepower paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission, and a plug-in hybrid version, the Tank 300 Hi4-T, delivering a combined 408 horsepower with a 37.1 kWh battery and an estimated 95 km of electric range, earning it a ‘Cero Emisiones’ environmental label from the Spanish DGT.
BAIC BJ30 Pro: Hybrid-Only
The BAIC BJ30 Pro is a lighter off-road vehicle, exclusively offered as a hybrid model in Spain, slated for release at the end of the year. Measuring 4.7 meters in length and featuring a wheelbase of 2.8 meters, it weighs 1,770 kilograms and combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with two electric motors, resulting in a combined output of 408 horsepower and 685 Nm of torque. It utilizes a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system.
Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700: Strong Demand
The Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700, recently launched in China, has already generated significant interest, accumulating over 44,000 orders within just one hour of its release. This robust SUV, measuring over 5 meters in length and featuring a 2.9-meter wheelbase, showcases Geely’s growing presence in the global Automotive market.
