DGT to Implement Adaptive Speed Limits on Highways

Starting October 1st, significant changes are coming to Spanish roadways, including new fines and restrictions, and a pioneering system that dynamically adjusts speed limits based on real-time conditions.

Intelligent Speed Adaptation System (ISA) Launch

The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) will activate an intelligent system that adapts speed limits in real-time, considering factors like traffic, accidents, and weather. This system, a first for Spain, will modify speed limits on high-capacity routes, moving beyond a fixed 120 km/h maximum.

Pilot Testing in Catalonia

Pilot Testing in Catalonia

The system will initially be tested on two sections of the AP-7 and AP-2 motorways in Catalonia. It utilizes sensors, cameras, and algorithms to instantly identify and respond to road anomalies, automatically reducing speed limits in response to accidents, congestion, or poor visibility.

Speed Limit Adjustments

Speed Limit Adjustments

Speed limits will fluctuate throughout the day, potentially decreasing to 100, 80, or 60 km/h during slow traffic, accidents, or adverse weather. Once conditions improve, the speed limit will return to its standard value.

Significant Fine

Significant Fine

Drivers exceeding the dynamically adjusted speed limit will face a fine of 20,000 euros.

Additionally, starting October 1st, individuals under 15 will be prohibited from riding scooters, and their parents will be subject to a fine.
